Get Your Money’s Worth From a Refinishing Job!
Refinishing your bathtub is an amazing way to restore it aesthetically without having to completely replace your tub and cause a ton of headache you don’t need. Bathtub refinishing can easily fix and fill any chips and cracks you may have and can also hide any of the stains that you can never seem to be able to get up from your tub. Bathtub refinishing also gives you the option to change the color of your tub to whatever you may prefer. If you live in an older home, it used to be a thing to have strange colors like salmon as the theme for your entire bathroom. Refinishing can take that from too pink to stand, to a nice classy white.
Once you have had your tub done, you want to keep it in as good condition as you can for as long as you can. Bathtub refinishing involves the application of a special and resilient outside coating. With that said, it can be damaged by impropper cleaning techniques, it’s by no means indestructible or permanent. Proper bathtub care and maintenance can ensure your recoating lasts for as long as 20 years or more.
Mild Cleansers Only
Scrubbing pads or abrasive cleaners will scratch the surface of your new refinished bathtub and this causes the bond to weaken, letting water and debris get in underneath the refinished coat. Abrasive cleaners like Soft Scrub and Comet as well as harsh chemicals like ammonia or bleach can strip or scratch the paint from the bathtub surface. Use mild cleaners instead such as liquid soaps or even dish soaps and soft cloths to clean. A car wash mitt is ideal as it is soft and can get into the bathtub grooves without causing scratches. The best thing you can do is just do a little bit of cleaning constantly, it will be so much easier for you.
Cleaning After Each Use
Ensure you clean the bathtub each time you use it to avoid getting stains or soap buildup that will require scrubbing. You can simply do this by rinsing out the tub and wiping down using a clean cloth. Wipe with liquid soap weekly to remove any remaining dirt. You can also use a squeegee to wipe any remaining water from the tub after each use to prevent mildew buildup. A little work now will help you avoid a LOT of work later.
Do Not Put Pets in the Tub
Pets will scratch the finishing on the bathtub and leave behind debris and nasty hair that could buildup on the bathtub’s surface. If you prefer to bathe your pets at home then you should either wash them with a hose outside or prepare a bath in something else. Bathing your pets indoors could potentially damage your bathtub and only makes a mess. Even if they do behave, claws are going to lead to scratches no matter what.
Use Only Non-Stick Mats
Bath mats are a great extra layer of safety to have, but make sure you don’t get one with suction cups. Suction cups on bath mats could pull off the finish from your bathtub when the matt slides or is moved. Additionally, the suction on these mats keeps the mat to0 close to the tub, it really traps water in there and it quickly gets gross, things like mildew will build up in no time. It’s hard to get mildew up without causing any damage to the refinishing on your tub. It is also not advisable to hang your towels or bath mats on the side of the bathtub to dry as the water can encourage mold formation as well.
So when it comes down to it, you just want to use common sense. Clean whenever you need to, don’t use anything abrasive, and your tub should last you for a very long time to come!
